Enslaved to have its CANADIAN PREMIERE this Sunday, October 18, 2020 on CBC!

The six-part docuseries ENSLAVED,  led by icon and activist Samuel L. Jackson, will premiere on CBC TV and the free CBC Gem streaming service on Sunday, October 18 at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT), and on documentary Channel the day before, Saturday, October 17 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. ENSLAVED sheds new light on 400 years of human trafficking from Africa to the New World. Based on a DNA test identifying his ancestral tribe, the series traces Jackson’s personal journey from the U.S. to Gabon for his induction into the Benga tribe, with rare and unprecedented access to secret ceremonies and local customs. A Canada/UK co-production, the series also premiered in the U.S. on EPIX® on September 14. The series is being distributed internationally by Fremantle.

Using new diving technology – such as advanced 3D mapping and ground-penetrating radar – to locate and examine sunken slave ships on three continents, the series reveals an entirely new perspective on the history of the transatlantic slave trade. The series also tracks the efforts of Diving With a Purpose (DWP),  a collaborating organization with The National Association of Black Scuba Divers (NABS), as they search for and locate six slave ships that sank, drowning the enslaved humans aboard. Featuring the most dives ever made on sunken slave ships, Enslaved also chronicles the first positive identification of a“Freedom Ship,” an American schooner that ferried African American runaways to Canada.

Each episode follows three separate story lines: the quest for a sunken slave ship, a personal journey by Samuel L. Jackson and a historical investigation led by investigative journalists Simcha Jacobovici and Afua Hirsch.

ENSLAVED also celebrates stories of resistance, accomplishment and hope; the cultures left behind and the culture that we live in presently…a culture that, in many ways, was born in the bowels of those sunken slave ships.

ENSLAVED is a Canada/UK co-production between Toronto-based Associated Producers and London-based Cornelia Street Productions produced in association with CBC, Canada’s public broadcaster, and documentary Channel in Canada. Simcha Jacobovici serves as series director. Enslaved is executive produced by Samuel L. Jackson, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Eli Selden, Rob Lee, Simcha Jacobovici, Ric Esther Bienstock, Sarah Sapper and Yaron Niski, and produced by Ric Esther Bienstock, Sarah Sapper and Felix Golubev. Produced in association with Anonymous Content, along with UppiTV, Samuel and LaTanya Jackson’s television production company. Produced with the participation of Rogers Cable Network Fund and Canada Media Fund with the assistance of the Canadian Film or Video Tax Credit and the Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit.

Fremantle holds global distribution rights (excluding U.S., Canada and Israel).

New Atlantis Film Gets Its Canadian Premiere!

Was the lost city of “Atlantis” a real place? And if it was, can its ruins be found today? “Atlantis Rising” is Discovery Canada’s latest investigative, high-end special into the world of ancient history and archaeology. Directed by three-time Emmy-winning filmmaker, Simcha Jacobovici, this is his third collaboration with celebrated Oscar-winning producer/director James Cameron. Using the Greek philosopher Plato (4thcentury BC) as a guide…a virtual treasure map…they set out to identify “Atlantean” civilization while closing in on the lost city itself. The adventure ranges from Santorini, Malta, Sardinia and Southern Spain, all the way to the Azores. Shot on 4K and using drones at every location, “Atlantis Rising” is breathtaking and unique: investigative archaeology at its best.

Director/Producer Simcha Jacobovici is the 2017 winner of the Gordon Sinclair Award, from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.

In 2011, both Discovery Canada and National Geographic Channel partnered with Associated Producers on another documentary, FINDING ATLANTIS.

“The first part of this investigation made for a particularly timely special, drawing a large viewing audience when we aired it in 2011,” said Ken MacDonald, General Manager and Vice-President, Discovery Networks Canada. “Discovery’s Canadian audiences are still just as intrigued by iconic mysteries, and this expanded investigation into the facts behind the myth in ATLANTS RISING more than fits the bill.”

“National Geographic is committed to bring the world of science, exploration and adventure to our viewers worldwide. We are excited to partner with Cameron and Jacobovici for the quest to find Atlantis, one of the magical worlds that has resonated in our collective imaginations for thousands of years,” said Tim Pastore, President of Original Programming and Production, National Geographic Channel.

“Finding the historical and archeological truth behind the Atlantis myth has always been a fascination of mine,” said Cameron. “Our exploration team will investigate several new theories about where the real Atlantis was, who these mysterious people were, and what disaster wiped them from the Earth over three millennia ago.”

ATLANTIS RISING  is produced by Associated Producers, in association with Discovery Canada and National Geographic Channel. Executive Producers are James Cameron and Yaron Niski. Producers are Simcha Jacobovici and Felix Golubev. For Discovery Canada, General Manager and Vice-President Ken MacDonald is Production Executive. For National Geographic Executive Producer is Matt Renner and Tim Pastore is President of Original Programming and Production.

“Last Days of Jesus” to air on PBS

For almost two millennia, the events of the Passion of Christ as chronicled in the Gospels, have been honoured and celebrated by Christians from around the world. The key moments of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, his arrest, trial and finally, his crucifixion, have been immortalized in countless films, music and works of art.

The story of Jesus, son of God, has engrained itself into global consciousness; the mystical healer, teacher and Rabbi, who wandered pastoral lands and preached to his disciples in preparation for a divine kingdom to come, ultimately sacrificing his life for the sake of all. Yet in recent years, a growing number of religious experts and historians have begun to question the canonical version of events. And they discovered a different story, the man behind the myth: a revolutionary at the center of the political and religious turmoil of his time.

A little over two thousand years ago, the story of the historical Jesus of Nazareth, son of a carpenter and stone mason, begins in a tiny village in the hills of the Galilee. Some thirty years later, in Jerusalem, his life ends and the story of Christianity unfolds. Little is known from the Gospels about the man himself until he steps onto the scene as a self-proclaimed and increasingly popular Messiah who captures the imagination of the crowds. A man, first celebrated and adored, who experiences the ultimate downfall in the course of only six days during the Passover holidays, tossed around like a pawn in a chess game. Or so the official version tells us.

Based on crucial archaeological evidence and historical analysis, LAST DAYS OF JESUS  peels back the layers of the traditional Gospel narrative to shine a new light on the historical Jesus. It explores key members of the Herodian Dynasty, such as Herod Antipas, son of the Roman client-king in Judea, as well as the main characters in the capital of the Roman Empire, bringing to life a man that many would have rather seen erased from history. Lucius Aelius Sejanus, a Prefect with dubious yet fierce ambitions who, in the absence of Emperor Tiberius, reached for ultimate power around 30AD, just when Jesus is at the height of his politically active years.

Jesus of Nazareth was a man acutely tuned into the power politics of his time. This is the story told by leading scholars and authors in the field of Classics, Religion, History and Archaeology based on existing as well as new evidence from ancient texts and artifacts. LAST DAYS OF JESUS illustrates how the ever-changing political landscape in Rome impacted on Jesus’ life and connects the dots between Rome, Jerusalem and the backwaters of the Galilee. This film brings forth the evidence for an extraordinary political alliance between Jesus and the most determined men in Rome and in the Judean province, who struck a deal that almost changed the course of history.

LAST DAYS OF JESUS is co-produced by Associated Producers and BLINK Films, in association with PBS and Vision TV Canada. Written and Directed by Peter Oxley. Executive Producers are Simcha Jacobovici, David McNab and Dan Chambers. Producers are Anika Pilnei, Olive King and Felix Golubev.
